Despite popular opinion of many OC peeps, I LOVE going up to LA. Yes there is traffic, yes it can be a pain to drive there, buuuut it is such a fun getaway once you arrive (and if you know where to go). Growing up, my mom took me to concerts all the time so I got to know the city pretty well. My favorite parts of LA are West Hollywood and Malibu. This past weekend I did a getaway so I will share where I stayed, but also some other fun ideas that will make you feel like you aren't in the OC bubble!
Where to stay: The Andaz West Hollywood
Since the drive to LA is such a pain, it is nice to stay at a hotel and spend the night...especially if you plan to drink! This past weekend I stayed at the Andaz on Sunset BLVD and it was amazing. This hotel is only a couple years old and screams Old Hollywood. The rooftop pool/bar is incredible and the nightly wine social hour (free wine!) from 5-6pm is nice as well. Our room was super clean and quite big, with a beautiful view of the LA skyline. This hotel is also super close to all the fun nightlife of West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip.
Where to shop: The Grove
The Grove has been a family favorite of ours since we were little. It is amazing to see how much this place has grown and expanded over the years. The cutest outdoor shopping center and farmers market EVERThe Grove is a beautiful outdoor shopping center with every store you can imagine. Not only does it have a Nordstrom and a 4 story Nike, but also shops that aren't in the Mission Mall or Spectrum such as Splendid, Athleta, Charlotte Tillbury, Alo Yoga, and did I mention there is a Pressed Juicery AND a Halo Top. Honestly the Grove is like no other shopping experience, which is why I always see celebs whenever I go. Drive up to the Grove shop, have lunch, see a movie, walk around! I could spend hours here. I specifically went there for a book signing at the Barnes and Noble with Antoni from Queer Eye. SO much fun!
Food: SUR Restaurant. One of the best meals I have had in a while. I had the filet and my mom has the sea bass AMAZING! We both drank a refreshing cocktail called “spa water”. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time!
Side note- I am obsessed with this Rebecca Minkoff purse I snagged at Nordstrom rack ($89)!
Drink: The Abbey ,Tom Tom, and Pump.
I recommend the dinner at Sur, stop by Tom Tom it Pump, 2/3 of RHOB Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurant/lounges in LA, and end the night at the Abbey. The Abbey is one of the most famous bars In WEHO and a must-go for a fun and wild time!!! If you are looking to be in the “LA scene” as my mom would say, you can’t go wrong with any of these restaurants.
Malibu Wine Safari (65$ explorer package) 90 min, 6 tastings, water, crackers & spreads 🍷
I had heard mixed reviews about Malibu Wine Safaris, but from first hand experience, I can now write my own review. I had a fabulous time with our wonderful tour guides Kyle and Maxx. We were celebrating my mom’s birthday and they made sure to make her feel special! Despite negative reviews of rude tour guides, we had great tour guides, generous pours, and had such a fun time!!
The Explorer tour is such a unique and amazing experience, you drive into the hills of Malibu onto the Saddle Rock Ranch Estate. I felt transported into a completely different place!! Great wine, spectacular views, and such fun employees to chat with! We went on the 2oclock tour on a Sunday, so our bus was full, but it made it more entertaining! It was very hot, especially being in the mountains. Make sure to bring (or buy one of their super cute hats like I did) and bring a water!
We got to meet zebras, catch a glimpse of Stanley the giraffe, and see alpacas and horses. I recommend booking a few months in advance especially if you want to do the Giraffe tour, which was sold out for us🙈
Overall 10/10 recommend, worth every penny!
Stop for breakfast or lunch at Malibu Farm Pier cafe. I had the mint lemonade Arnold Palmer and the BLT kale salad which was delicious. Honestly the food was great and fresh, but the view is really why I’d go back. One of the prettiest and most unique places in So Cal.
I hope this helps with planning your next day or weekend in the city of stars...
